SPOILS TO THE VICTORS

DIVIDING THE STAKES AUCKLAND’S GOOD QUOTA _ THE tidy sum of £.8,000 was paid A . , ou , t 4P prize money by the Auckland Trotting Club in connection with the meeting just concluded. Of this handsome amount oyer half, £4,500, remains in the ! district, an unusual occurrence for Auckland fixtures. It is worthy of note that the principal stake collecter, Mr. Geo. McMillan, is an Aucklander, but his horses are trained in the South. This may appear strange, particularly as the popular owner is a prominent member of the Auckland Club, but may be he recognises that there are better training facilities in the South, which would account for Machine Gun and Co. being prepared there. DIVIDED HONOURS It is a case of “honours divided,” as although the big prizes remain in Auckland the credit for the achievement of Machine Gun must be given to Christchurch and trainer Roy Berry. Mr. Moodabe is another Aucklander who made a good bite at the prize plum, and Amaris and the consistent Jewel Pointer were responsible for a cheque for £455 being handed to Mr. Moodabe. This is a nice Christmas present, and should be the forerunner of future successes. Trainer J. Shaw deserves to have a turn of luck with his charges, and had there been a special prize for “conditioned” horses, the Ellerslie mentor would have been knocking for it. SOUTHERN WINNERS Mr. J. Washington, whose neat and speedy little filly Daphne de Oro won the Great Northern Derby, headed the list of Southern owners with £6OO. being closely followed by Mr. J. R. Frizzell, owner of the useful Tom Thumb, whose winnings reached £550. W. T. Lowe, owner of that great trotter, Trampfast, was presented with £450, and in getting the major portion of this amount, his speedy squaregaiter improved his handicap time from 4.35 to 4.30, a splendid, if perhaps, unlucky performance. Following is the list of winning owners: Geo. McMillan £1,390 J. Washington .. . 600 J. R. Frizzell 550 M. Moodabe 455 W. T. Lowe 450 G. J. Barton and M. O’Brien .. 350 W. E. Cock bill 315 C. E.
