BRANDISHED REVOLVER AND CLEARED COURT
AMAZING ACTION OF DEFENCE COUNSEL IN MURDER CHARGE By Cable.-—Press Association. — Copyright. PARIS, Wednesday. Excitement reached a great height to-day at the trial of the Russian Jew. Samuel Schwartzbard, on a charge of murdering General Petlura, of Russia, in Paris on May 25, 1926. It was stated in evidence that the victim of the crime was killed by a bullet which was fired when he was already lying on the ground. At that stage counsel for the defence, M. Torres, sprang to his feet. Whipping a revolver from beneath his gown he brandished it right and left, exclaiming: 1 will show you how General Petlura reecived his fatal wound when he was tottering to the ground.” When the occupants of the Court saw counsel’s revolver brandished they became panic-stricken and stampeded from the courtroom. The trial had to be stopped for a-quarter of an hour. Then it was found that M. Torres’s revolver was not loaded.—A. and N.Z.
