“GLORIOUS CATHEDRAL”
CLERGY’S RESPONSIBILITY Eloquently Archdeacon G. Mac Murray urged the clergy last evening to take up the responsibility of bringing true Bishop Selwyn’s “dream of the glorious cathedral on the other side of the road.” The Auckland Diocesan Synod is considering a Bill for introduction to the next session of the General Synod. Steps are to be taken by the synod to establish its right of ownership of property in Parnell which, it is contended, was dedicated by Bishop Selwyn in 1859 as an area on which to erect a permanent cathedral. Archdeacon G. Mac Murray said the property set aside by Bishop Selwyn totalled about 33 acres. Six and ahalf acres were to be used for the cathedral site, four acres for Bishopscourt and 15 acres for endowment purposes. It seemed they were at last able to say with a fair amount of certainty that they would be able to go ahead with preparations for a permanent cathedral in Auckland.
The bill will be considered by synod to-day.
