PREPARING FOR TRENTHAM RACES

COURSE VERY HARD FAVOURITES FOR BIG EVENTS (Special to THE SUN.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Those trainers who have arrived at Trentham with horses for the Wellington meeting are complaining about the hard condition of the course, and there is no doubt that unless rain falls before Saturday, it will be almost as fast and as hard as for the summer meetings. There is no certainty that we will not get a little rain or even a deluge, as clouds have been gathering all day. As Crown Area will not be a runner at the meeting, that will leave A. E. Ellis quite free to ride Limerick in the Champion Plate, and no doubt he will be more than pleased to get the opportunity. After her escapade at Trentham the other morning, when she bolted with her rider, it has been deemed wise to withdraw Endorse from her engagements at the meeting. This will make the way easier for some of the others in the Wellesley Stakes. A SMART COLT One who is coming into favour a little for the Wellesley Stakes is Raasay, the Hawke’s Bay youngster, who has won at his last couple of starts. He has done well since arriving at Trentham, and whether he wins or not looks sure to run a good race. Raasay is not at his best yet, and some of those whom he has not yet met might be a little more forward than he. Trose who were present at the Wa- | nganui spring meeting when the Debui tante Stakes, the first two-year-old ! race of the season was run, might remember that Tea Doll finished close up behind the placed horses and was running on at the end of the race. Some of the two-year-olds were galloped in batches at Trentham this morning, and Tea 801 l arrived at the head of her bunch. One of the most favoured of the candidates for the Shorts Handicap on Saturday is Gascony. This particular member of F. Davis’s team has been working well at Woodville, but he might not be quite forward enough. It is worth considering, however, that several of the others will be in the same condition. Gascony is to be ridden in the Shorts by T. Green. LETS THEM DOWN

Since a good gallop on Tuesday Grand Knight has increased in favour for the big sprint, but he is not taking the public fancy nearly as strongly as one would expect him to do. Grand Knight runs sprint races well on both the Riccarton and the Wanganui courses, and there does not seem to be any reason why he should not do equally well at Trentham, where he has run well in slightly longer races.

Roy Reed’s mount in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham on Saturday will be Joy King, than whom there were few better performers about at the end of last autumn. As Joy King looked really well when he was raced at Auckland earlier in the present month, he is being expected to win a race any time now. GOOD THREE-YEAR-OLD Since his success in the open sprint at the Carterton meeting Royal Ceres has gathered a number of firm friends round him for the Shorts Handicap. This race is developing a more open aspect as the day of the meeting draws near. In all probability, unless there is a stable liking for Shirley, Booster will start favourite for the Shorts Handicap, as he will be regarded as being more forward than several of the North Island horses, and moreover, he has won on the Trentham course previously, so it cannot be said that the course does not suit him. FAVOURITE FOR BIG RACE Star Stranger continues to hold his position as the favourite for the Wellington Handicap, and unless the weather cracks up so badly that the course becoms heavy, he is likely to hold the post of honour when the machine closes on the race. It goes almost without saying that he will have the services of Roy Reed, who is very hard to beat in long distance races on the Trentham course. More than likely the Southern two-year-old Childsplay will be favourite for the Wellesley Stakes. She has a big reputation here, and if she gallops well at Trentham prior to the meeting she will come into even greater favour. Rapier will have a big following for the Wellington Handicap in which the three horses to be the best backed on the machine look likely to be Star Stranger, Rapier and Mask. It was not certain this morning that Keddar would be brought to Trentham to race, as he lightened up after racing at Otaki. However, he is picking up quickly, and no doubt a decision will be arrived at to-morrow. If be starts on Saturday lie will be bracketed on the machine with Kindle, who has been working rather attractively on the tracks at Trentham. Tiega has done well on the tracks since he arrived at Trentham. and lie looks as if the race he had at Carterton did liim considerable good. To all appearances Tiega is a better horse tms season than he has been at any previous time in his career.
