ANGLICAN BOARD OF MISSIONS MEET
WORK IN THE ISLANDS
The largest and most interesting held yet, describes the annual meeting of the Anglican Board of Missions, which took place last evening in the Holy Sepulchre Parish Hall. There was an attendance of over 400 church-people. Archbishop Averill presided. Dr. Phyllis Haddow, Miss Maud Dineen and Miss Blanche Tobin, missionaries on furlough from China, and the Rev. W. H. Panapa, a Maori priest were the speakers of the evening. A fine series of lantern views depicting life in the islands of Melanesia and the work of the Church there were screened. The photographs were secured by Major H. S. Robinson, secretary of the Melanesian Mission, who recently toured the islands. Scholars of the St. Stephen’s School for Maori Boys and Queen Victoria School for Maori girls sang unaccompanied under the direction of Mr. Albert Wilson, hymns in English and in their own tongue. The report presented to the meeting by the local secretary of the board, the Rev. Cecil A. B. Watson, disclosed a highly satisfactory financial position. Although the Auckland Diocese had been asked for £2,983 as its mission quota, actually £3,972 bad been raised during the year. Twenty-four parishes had reached the quota asked of them. The report referred also to the very successful missionary festivals held at St. Paul’s and All Saints’ Churches.
