ROUND A CONTINENT
INTREPID NEW ZEALANDERS
How two New Zealand women succeeded in establishing an Australian record by traversing the Continent by motor-car was related by Mrs. Gladys Sandford, in a lecture at the concert chamber of the Auckland Town Hall last evening. At least three records were made, declared Mrs. Sandford, as she spoke of her interesting adventures with Miss Christie, of Thames. Their car was the first closed car to reach Darwin. the capital of the Northern Territory. They werp the first women to undertake such a trip. They succeeded where others had failed, in getting through when the rainy season had converted many of the districts into positive morasses.
Not one of the least exciting adventures was their flight before an advancing bush fire. With 40 gallons of petrol in the car, and a leaking tank Plugged with soap, their plight was certainly by no means enviable. . Snakes and mosquitoes made the journey anything but pleasant at times.
Mrs. Sandford illustrated her exceedingly interesting lecture with a number of lantern slides made from ner own photographs.
