WAIUKU CANAL
DOUBTS AS TO USEFULNESS ONEHUNGA CHAMBER MEETS Mr. W. J. Davies, of the OnehungaManukau Chamber of Commerce, doubts the usefulness of the Waiuku Canal. At a meeting of the chamber last evening Mr. Davies complimented the Auckland Harbour Board on its action in collecting the necessary statistics in regard to the proposed Waiuku Canal and thereby satisfying the public as to the probability of the scheme becoming a payable one or not. He himself doubted the soundness of the project owing to the fact that nowadays goods can be transported from Auckland to Waiuku in two hours on concrete roads and with a minimum of handling. When the information sought by the harbour board was coordinated it would be seen whether or not the time was ripe for a waterway from the Manukau to the Waikato. The secretary, Mr. A. G. Houldsworth, was appointed delegate to attend the annual conference of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce to be held in Christchurch on October 28.
