NEW REGENT
“ROUGH HOUSE ROSIE” “Bough House Bosie,” now being shown to' crowded audiences at the New Begent Theatre, is Clara Bow’s first picture since Elinor Glyn’s “It” This new production, adapted by Max Marcin from Nunnally Johnson's “Saturday Evening Post’’ story, is said to create just as many laughs and heart throbs as her earlier vehicles did. To aid Miss Bow in her efforts, director Frank Strayer cast such fine players as Reed Howes, Arthur Housman, Doris Hill, and Douglas Gilmcre in featured roles. Howes is Clara’s prize-fighting sweetheart; Housman is his hardened trainer; Miss Hill, the star’s chum; and Gilmore, her wealthy admirer. The backgrounds against which the picture has been filmed are as varied as they are interesting. It opens at a beach amusement resort, goes from there to a cabaret, thence to a country club, and finally to the ringside of an immense boxing stadium, where Howes fights for the middle-weight championship of the world. One can easily imagine the comedy contained in scenes at the resort, In a police court where Clara protests her innocence to the judge, at her home when she lands a “right” on Howes’s jaw, and finally at the big fight itself. As for•* drama, there is more than enough to satisfy lovers of that muse. Mirth and melody are associated in the act of Bower and Rutherford, now appearing on the stage at the Begent Theatre, and the lady member will be known as “Effervescent Elsie” for the rest of her stay. It is one of the brightest acts ever seen in Auckland. Maurice Guttridge and his operatic orchestra play a number of wellknown selections, among then** being “Queen of Autumn.” Eddie Horton’s novelty, “So Blue,” with panathrope accompaniment, is encored nightly.
