EULALIE BEATEN IN THE GUINEAS
DUNEDIN MEETING CONCLUDED DUNEDIN, Saturday. The second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting was held in dull weather, with slight showers. The course was heavy after the recent rain. The totalisator handled £19,157 for the day, compared with £26,3)2 on the second day last year, making a total for the meeting of £35,542, compared with £43,494 last year—a decrease of £7,952. Favourite Falls Bachelor Gay was made favourite for the Waikari Hurdles, but there was solid support for Kaikahu and Wharncliffe. Bachelor Gay and Captain Sarto led early from Clontarf and Tholomon, but passing the six-furlong post, Clontarf went to the front from Bachelor Gay, Captain Sarto and Kapuna. Clontarf led across the top and into the straight from Bachelor Gay, but at the last fence the latter came to grief. Clontarf went on to win easily by three lengths from Beauty Light, who finished very fast. Kapuna was a head away third, followed by Gay Jim, who met with interference when Bachelor Gay fell. Thrilling Finish Silver Paper was made a good favourite for the Dominion Handicap. Haulage and Battle Maid were early leaders, but three furlongs from home. Battle Maid drew away from Haulage, and led into the straight from Silver Paper, who came from a long way back. In a thrilling set-to over the last furlong. Battle Maid held her advantage and passed the post a length ahead of Silver Paper. Dumblane was 12 lengths away third, followed by Some Signal. Cetchela and Rin Tin Tin were left at the barrier. Favourite Third Royal Head was favourite for the Kaikorai Handicap. All Comment was slow to begin, and when a furlong had been covered, Schottische, Piton, Appian and Royal Head was the order. Piton led along the back into the straight, but in the run home Schottische did best, and beat Piton by a length, with Royal Head a similar distance away third, followed, by Eyed Ova. Won With Late Run Eulalie was a pronounced favourite for the Dunedin Guineas- There was a delay at the barrier, and when the field got away, Honey and Money Peer were left. Eulalie went to the front from Don Jose, Glad Light, Rotor and Starflight, with Martarma well back. Eulalie led across the top and into the straight from Satrap and Glad Light, with Ark Royal coming fast. At the distance, Eulalie held charge, but 100 yards from the post Royal challenged Eulalie and he got up in time to defat the favourite by half a head, with Satrap a length and a-half away third, followed by Martarma. Martarma could never handle the going. Won in a Canter Royal Game was made favourite in a good betting race fo.r the Ranfurly Handicap. Taboo hopped out smartly from Royal Game, Wingatui, and Vaward and, leading all the way, won in a common canter by eight lengths from Royal Game, with Vaward four lengths further back third. Overhaul was fourth. Taboo handled the heavy going in great style, and won with ridiculous ease. Winner Hot Favourite Black Duke was all the rage for the Shorts Handicap. Comic Song was the early leader, but Cassolette and Dismantle led into the straight from Comic Song, Black Duke, and Father O’Flynn. Black Duke came through at the distance and, stalling off Dismantle, won by a neck. Father O’Flynn was a similar distance away third, with Comic Song fourth. Taboo Completes Double As the result of a win earlier in the >day, Taboo was rehandicapped 71b for the Telegraph Handicap, bringing his weight up to 9.4. Taboo streaked away from his field, six furlorigs from home, and again won in a common canter by six lengths from Fairy Herald, with Aberfeldy six lengths away third. Taboo eased up to walk past the post. GREATLY IMPROVED The meeting concluded with the Clarendon Handicap, for which Royal Saxon started favourite. Credit and Attract were the early leaders from Royal Saxon and Felony, but the leading pair dropped back entering the straight, where Royal Saxon took charge and going on defeated Felony by a. length. Moratorium was five lengths away third, with Good as Gold next. Royal Saxon greatly improved on his first day’s form. A —TABOO, 7.8 1 I—ROYAL GAME, 8.7 2 3—VAWARD, 8.2 3 Scr.: Countersign, Fairy Herald and Pink Note. Won by six lengths, four lengths between second and third. Time, 1.48. SHORTS HANDICAP Of £250; 6 furlongs 1— BLACK DUKE, 7.12 1 6 DISMANTLE, 7.1 2 3—FATHER O’FLYNN, 7.7 3 All started. Won by half a length, a length between second and third. Time, 1.19 2-5. TELEGRAPH HANDICAP £225; 1 Mile. 2 TABOO, 8.11 1 I—FAIRY HERALD, 9.4 2 S—ABERFELDY, 7.8 3 Scratched.—Black Duke and Bright Mark. Won by six lengths, four lengths between second and third. Time, 1.49. Credit • led out but Royal Saxon was first into the straight, and came on to win by a length, with four lengths between second and third. Good as Go:d was fourth. Time, 1.22 4-5.
