WON BIG DOUBLE

CAULFIELD CUP WINNER IPMORTED HORSE’S SUCCESS MELBOURNE, Sunday. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s spring meeting was concluded at Caulfield yesterday in fine weather. There was an enormous attendance. The Governor-General, Lord Stonehaven, was present and there were many inter-State visitors and a few from New Zealand. There was an exciting finish in the Oby Hurdle Race. Brightsword finished well and beat the pacemaker, Sir Gleam, in the last 20 yards. Salzach was always prominent in the contest for the Gwyn Nursery Handicap, and won in brilliant style. £ The colt cost l,loogns. as a yearling and is a half-brother to Bairn. The New Zealand gelding Pentagram fell when leading at the third fence in the Waiyuna Steeplechase. Woomera led for the rest of the journey and won comfortably. He is a brother of the crack jumper Palbi. TEXTILE BRILLIANT A field of 24 was produced to contest the Caulfield Cup. Textile finished with a phenomenal run and scored a brilliant win. On the opening day of the meeting he won the Toorak Handicap. In to-day’s race he started with a great run and was interfered with slightly once. His rider, W. Scanlon, waited for a run on the rails at the turn. Then the race was all over. Textile was bred in South Australia and is trained by E. O’Uwyer. He is owned by Messrs. Colin Brown and M. McLean. The latter bought a half share in Textile recently for £750. W. Scanlon, who steered Textile, is a native of Wagga, and is 19 years old. Affirm made a great effort to win the cup, leading the field into the straight. Star d’Or finished well, but was unlucky in the running. W. Duncan, who had the mount on Royal Charter, stated that his horse was never out of trouble. Lonicera was always prominent in the Burwood Handicap, and he won nicely. He was trained by the ex-New Zealander, D. Price, and was ridden by Daniels, who scored his fourth win of the meeting. The imported horse Quirk, after being prominent all the way in the contest for the Windsor Handicap, finished best, and won his race in good style. Quirk is owned and was trained by Mr. Eric Connolly. He was ridden by the New South Wales jockey E. Bartle.
