NOTES AND COMMENTS

FROM NEAR AND FAR PROVINCIAL TOPICS The roan mare Lady Joan is still in active work at Mangere, under S. Groat’s tuition, and is hitting her straps freely. Although she is light in condition her work has been accomplished in the right manner and should she, in future be encouraged to do her best when carrying silk, there is nothing to .stop her from catching the eye of the man in the box. A Promising Sort At Mangere G. Paton is educating a four-year-old mare by Our Thorpe from a Wildwood Junr. mare. The newcomer has not been asked to do a great deal, but such work as she has accomplished has pleased her connections. Betty Moko’s Sister The four-year-old full-sister to Betty Moko when seen recently at Mangere was trotting along in good style and showing a clean gait. So far she has not been asked to face the starter, but her owner contemplates giving the maiden an opportunity to show her capabilities later on in the season. Nelson Fame as a Sire The grey pacing mare Ruby Huon, who last season produced a colt foal to Peter Moko, is to foal shortly to the speedy Mangere miler Nelson Fame. Some of his stock have already made an appearance in the district. Retired From the Game J. Bullock, the popular Hawera trainer, brought Lou Pronto through with his team to go into Geo. Phipps’s stable. The Don Pronto mare, who is out of Lou Dillon, dam of Dick Dillon, has been in Phil Green’s stable during the past season, winning a race at Marlborough. Phil has given up the trotting ghost for keeps this time. Southern Tattle Taipoiti, an aged mare by Petereta, dam Proud Brenda, went two good races for C. Donald at Methven, and she should annex a 12-furlong event later. She raced on the West Coast, where she is owned, for several seasons, and although she showed a lot of speed was not reliable. When she did get a stake her few supporters got a substantial dividend. Black Admiral’s Relative Brown Admiral, a three-year-old half-brother to Black Admiral, was a competitor at Methven. He was made favourite for the Avonmore Handicap, but ran very green. He is a good pacer that gives promise of turning out a useful horse next season. Still a Bit Fussy Orphan v/as a bit fussy at the start of his races at Methven and lost so much ground that his supporters were deprived of the pleasure of seeing him win. Fortunately for those who stuck to him in the Visitors’ Handicap he was coupled with the winner. Well-bred One Glenrowan is a real racehorse, and with a little more tuition he will win a race. He is a five-year-old gelding by Brent Locanda from Aileen, a sister to Emmeline (2.8 3-5). Good Combination The American pacer Drusus, 2.9£, has furnished into a commandinglooking stallion. He is a true representative of the McKinney—Bingen combination, and is demonstrating his powers in this country as a sire of per-fect-gaited, well-built colts and fillies. A Smart Filly Royal Authoress is a smart filly out of the tapes and a nice pacer.. She finished well under a stiff drive at Methven, and though beaten into second place she showed that she is made of the right material. A Useful Programme In view of the succes of the spring meeting the Wellington Trotting Club has decided to draw up an attractive programme for the summer meeting, to be held on Saturday, December 30. The sum of £2,200 is to be allocated in stake money, distributed as follow: New Zealand Gold Cup, two miles. 4.34 class, £6OO. Electric Handicap, one mile and aquarter, 2.46 class, £350. Mutt Park Trial, one mile and alialf, 3.42 class, £l5O. Railway Handicap, one mile and a-half, 3.36 class, £2OO. Middle Class Handicap, two miles, 4.50 class, £250. Nai Nai Handicap Trot, one mile and a-half, 3.36 class, £2OO. Wilford Handicap Trot, two miles. 4.48 class, £250. Sharpe Handicap (saddle), one mile, 2.18 class, £20,0. Cracks for Greymouth New Zealand Cup candidates engaged at Greymouth in the trial over 12£ furlongs are Logan Chief, Cardinal Logan, Acron, Peter Bingen, Great Hope, Prince Pointer and Great Bingen. The sparks will fly on the clay track if the circuit is dry and Coasters will get some exciting sport when the crack-a-jacks meet.

Taking Them On Logan Holm. Golden Devon and Bonny Logan will tackle the Cup candidates at Greymouth next week-end and they are a speedy trio. The distance, 12£ furlongs, will suit Golden Devon and as he knows the track like the dux of a school knows his lessons, will give those behind him something to do to head him off. That good solid trotter. Cannonball, figures with the pacers on the list for Greymouth and should give a good account of himself. He appears in the role of a sprinter and he has already proved himself an adept at gathering up speed. He may be as fast as any of the others in the S* furlong heat. Keeping the Money at Home Methven owners enjoyed a considerable amount of success at the inaugural meeting of the Methven Trotting Club on Saturday. In the Drayton Handicap Mr. J. Dowling’s Frontier finished in third place. Mr. P. McNeill's Milo Minto won the Mt. Harding Handicap. Mr. C. Hutchison’s Bay Nuit was third in the Methven Cup. In the Avonmore Handicap three Methvenowned horses, viz.. Kiowa, Mary Locanda and Forward Maid, filled the places, and Mr. E. F. Ward’s Locanda General won the Visitors’ Handicap.
