EMPLOYMENT OF COLLEGE STUDENTS
UNION’S OBJECTIONS (Special to THE SUN.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Objections to the employment of Canterbury College students by engineering firms during the forthcoming vacation, are contained in * letter from the secretary of the Christchurch branch of the Engineering Trade Union, Mr. G. T. Thurston, to the Minister of Labour. The union asks that the Minister should use every avenue to prevent the employment of students during a Period of depression. The letter adds: ‘Previous correspondence and data Placed before you in connection with the employment of students proves conclu**v*!y that even wh-m trade is at its best the question is a se *ious one to us, while during a period of depression such as •xists at present oir members are to be further victimised by the employment of People who, in a large number of cases, can afford to be idle for even a year or year 8. ‘‘"'e are of opinion that sincere efforts should be made to prevent their employment until such time as those who follow the calling for a living are again fully employed, and we trust that we have your support in this request.”
