ROAD PROBLEMS

COST OF MAINTENANCE INCIDENCE OF TAXATION (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Speaking at the Hamilton Borough Council meeting last night, Cr. F. W. Luxford complained of the Injustice of the incidence of taxation for street maintenance, and said anomalies should be rectified. He declared that of the .£58,000 collected in rates in Hamilton, £25,000 was spent on street construction and maintenance. Of the latter sum the motorists as motorists contributed nothing. There were 60 miles of streets in Hamilton and it cost £420 a mile to maintain them. In the No. 3 Heavy Traffic District the sum ot £48,600 had been spent in the last 12 months; on road maintenance. Of this sum £ 5,000 had been received from heavy traffic fees. It was decided to hold a conference with local bodies in No. 3 licensing district with regard to the allocation of fees in the future.
