! couple of years ahead Two years ago J Phalaris headed the list of winning sires, his stock earning £41,475 in stakes. He j was raced by Lord Derby in the years of the Great War, and was one of th*: greatest gallopers the writer has ever seen, possessing a machine-like action suggestive of wonderful speed. Mr. O. M. Currie, of Wanganui, on one occasion endeavoured to purchase Phalaris, but a last minute hitch prevented the transaction being completed. Althoagh only a sprinter himself, Phalaris has got good stayers, notably the Derby winner, Manna, while he also got Colorado, thrice conqueror of Coronach. In addition to Pharamond, yesterday's winner. Lord Derby has another smart twe-year-old in Fairway, ?o that it would come as no surprise to find the popular blark jacket and white cap being well to the fore when next season's classics come up for decision.
