BAGBY FOR TRIAL
CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER ALLEGED EXCESSIVE SPEED -yyALTER SCOTT BAGBY, the 20-year-old jockey, was committed to the Supreme Court for trial yesterday afternoon, charged with the manslaughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Sarah Short. He pleaded rot guilty. Bail was allowed on Bagby’s own recognisance of £SOO, and two sureties of a similar amount. The police allege that Bagby negligently drove his motor-car along Manukau Road at an excessive speed past a stationary tramcar on the night of September 26. The inquest was taken in conjunction with tine court proceedings, which occupied the whole afternoon. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., as coroner, returned a verdict that Mrs. Short died of injuries and shock through being struck by a car driven by Bagby. Many witnesses were called by Chief-Detective Cummings. All said that the motor-car was travelling at a speed considered excessive under the circumstances. According to Senior-Detective Hammond, who interviewed him the day following the accident, Bagby admitted being the driver of the car which str«ck the woman. He expressed sorrow, said Mr. Hammond, and intimated that he intended to own up, tout decided otherwise when given “ill advice.”
