DUNEDIN RACES
TWO CLASSIC EVENTS PROGRAMME FOR TO-MORROW The two classic races to be decided at the Dunedin meeting this week makes this Wingatui fixture an interesting one for sportsmen throughout the Dominion. THE opening day to-morrow will see | the McLean Stakes, five furlongs, for two-year-olds, come up for decision j and on Saturday the Guineas will be} run. For to-morrow’s card the fields j are very satisfactory, and with the' track in fair order there is going to be some interesting racing. Indeed, the acceptors number more than usual for the first day. j A start is to be made at mid-day with j the
The top weight has not been seen ; out for some time and therefore may j not be quite tuned up, so that those j below him will have their chance. A i likely pair are Kaikahu and Dubious, and no doubt they will command a big i following. Next is the MAUNGATUA HANDICAP 7 fur.
Starflight . 8 2 There are no less than four Guineas candidates engaged—Martarma, Satrap, Shaliruar and Starflight—and if they are to stand any chance in the classic on Saturday they must show up tomorrow. The recent training operations at Riccarton promised to throw some light on the prospects and taking a line through this a pair that will be in favour with backers are Martarma and Satrap. No less than twenty-one figure in the TfllAL STAKES
Some promising material is present and the contest should be an illuminating one. Royal Head and Sudden Storm are both good sorts, and if they get a run should be among the front line. Next on the card is the two-year-old classic, the
youngsters and information from the South has not been so plentiful as usual. Some smart youngsters are said to be Rigmarole, Childsplay, Silver Paper, Baby, Bliss, Some Signal and Waving: Corn. The first three named are trained at Riccarton, and they may have it on the Southerners as regards condition. Childsplay and Silver Paper may be the favourites. The principal handicap event is the
The top weight has been galloping in great style at Riccarton, but he will have to do his best if he is to win under this poultice. Set Sail has been penalised, but is in form. Solferite should see it out. Pink Note has been doing good track work, and Royal Game is always liable to score. Taboo, Assurance, Front Rank, Margaret Birney and Aberfeldy read like possibilities. Set Sail and Pink Note may be in most demand. The open sprint is the next event, the
Three Guineas entrants are engaged, and much interest will be taken in at least one of them, Eulalie, who was a ‘ regular swallow catcher last season. She has a good weight, but she should be able to easily hold her own. Comic Song is said to be back at his best, and with all his weight he will go well. Countersign has done some of her best gallops on the Wingatui course, and if there is a surprise she may do it. However, Eulalie and Comic Song will probably be the favourites. The hack sprinters are catered for in the TAIOMA HANDICAP

lowing remain in the The top weight would only need to be in form to tangle the opposition, although since Trentham three months ago he has not done much. Taboo was in form at Riccarton, and Arpent is galloping well at Wingatui. Lucy Locket is a consistent mare, and near the bottom is Aberfeldy, a useful horse whose pace seems to have been improved since being put over the sticks. Arpent and Fairy Herald will be in good demand by backers. The Dunedin Guineas will be run on Saturday. At present the Riccarton pair, Eulalie and Martarma, are disputing favouritism, and as they are both to run to-morrow, something should be gleaned of their prospects.
