“SMASH AND GRAB”
SAFEGUARD FOR JEWELLERS NEW ZEALANDER’S INVENTION Reference to the protective efficiency of the chain-mail shutter for the protection of jewellers’ shop windows, a description of which appeared in THE SUN some time ago, is made by three English newspapers. The invention is by Mr. M. C. M. O’Brien, a New Zealander, now in London, and a demonstration was giiven before representatives of Scotland Yard, •jewellers, and insurance companies. Those present were convinced of the protective efficiency of the invention. Following on the demonstration the firm of Holmes and Sons, Bond Street, had the invention installed owing to the fact that it had been a victim of the “smash and grab” gang. Briefly the invention is a shutter held in position by vacuum, and upon a window being smashed it falls, and an iron frame cuts off the valuables from reach and also sets bells ringing. It is invisible and does not interfere with the window display.
