A naval wireless message from Swatow reports that Chinese soldiers forced an entrance to an English Presbyterian Mission hospital, gagged the Chinese assistant, and threatened the officials with revolvers, intimating that in future they must receive instructions concerning the management of the institution from the military authorities. A doctor managed to get a message to a British warship, which immediately sent a platoon of armed naval ratings, who are guarding the hospital. The British Consul has notified the Chinese authorities that the guards will not be removed until an assurance is given that there will be no further molestation. The first clash between the Fengtien (Northern) and Shansi (Southern) armies, virtually for the possession of Peking, favoured the defenders. The Shansi army attacked on the PekingSuiyan railway front. Fighting commenced on Friday and ended in the Shansi forces being repulsed with heavy losses, including the capture of five battalions and a considerable haul of munitions. The Fengtienese art advancing and harrying the rear of the retreaters.
