Fast Cycling at Mangere
SATURDAY’S EVENTS BYRNES ESTABLISHES RECORD Fine, breezy weather was , experienced for Saturday’s races at Mangere. The course was in fai.r order, but many potholes made racing dangerous. They were responsible for an accident in which six riders came down in a heap. The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club held two races, a junior and an 11-mile senior. In the senior event M. P. Byrnes put up a record for the course, by placing 29min 4see alongside the 11 miles. The .race itself was won by H. Russell, who started off the Bmin 45sec mark. He took the lead entering the last lap, and was never afterwards troubled, winning by 200 yards. The strong wind blowing suited him, but found out many other competitors in this race. The pace set by three limit riders, Kelly, Welsh and Clarke, over the first lap, kept the whole field moving, some good pacing being done during the running of the race by D. O’Connell, Potter, Hamilton, Wakefield, on the front, Borlands (2), Stein, Platt and A. Baird on the middle and Gainsborough, Wilson, Byrnes and Wade on the back. A GOOD WIN The winner deserved his win. He has been a starter in nearly all the open races this season, but Saturday’s effort was easily his best to date. There was a good go between Potter and Platt for second place, the former lasting just long enough to win by a length. The race for time was between the two scratch riders, and a great finish they provided'. Byrnes led into the finishing straight 200 vards from the finish, with Wade alongside him. About 100 yards from the finish Byrnes jumped, and although Wade was a trier, he had to be content with second fastest, by half a length. When the timekeeper, M,r. J. C. Stewart, made the times up, it was found that new figures had been established for the 11-mile. In cutting out the distance in 29min 4sec the scratch boys rode splendidly, for the day was anything but a record-breaking one. Byrnes was warmly congratulated. HALL WINS EASILY The s^-mile junior race was also done in good time. The nine starters were led by Johnson and Hall, the winner, on 4min over the first three miles. From this point Hall went to the front, and was never headed, winning by 300 yards. R. Foubister, who ran second, started alone off the 30sec mark. He put up a great ride, and was unlucky in striking a boy like Hall. The scratch riders, Lichfield and Sercombe, did not do it right. They let Foubister gain on them over the journey, consequently he won fastest time prize, as well as getting second place. The Auckland Cycling Club had 14 starters in its 14-mile open event on Saturday. The race proved that as an unpaced rider, J. Deans, who started off the Slmin mark, was on his own on Saturday. He has been the most consistent performer in the cash ranks at Mangere this season, starting in every race, but this is his first win. He is one of the oldest riders in the Auckland Athletic and Cycling Club, and his win was extremely popular. The race for fastest time was won by A. White, scr., who beat A. Sutherland by two lengths. The following are the results: Manukau Amateur Cycling Club’s 11-mile Open Event.—H. Russell, 3min 4osec, 1; F. Potter, 4min, 2; P. Platt, 2min 30sec, 3.
