MARKETING EELS
NEW COMPANY FORMED Although eels are looked upon as a delicacy by many people, and smoked eels as something quite special, it is long since any organised exploitation of them has occurred in New Zealand. A new company is now reported to be in the course of formation to put in a plant at Churchill, near Rangiriri, with the object of placing eels on the New Zealand market, and then abroad. The Whangapai Lake and creek are stated to be literally teeming with eels and it is proposed to reconstruct the old weir in the creek, under riparian rights held since 1868, and now owned by Mr. Hallyburton Johnstone. Employment for some 20 unskilled labourers, on a weekly wage, is expected to be available, their duties being to take the fish from tfie river and clean and smoke, or otherwise prepare themforU«market_
