TEST OF SEAMANSHIP FOR YOUTHFUL CREWS
CORNWELL CUP CONTESTS A TEST of seamanship for boy 3 under 19 is to be held on the Waitemata in January, during the week commencing January 21, under the auspices of the Takapuna Boating Club. The trials will be the races for the Cornwell Cup, one of the two boating championships of New Zealand. The Takapuna Club won the trophy last year and therefore defends it this time. Entries from nine different ports have been received to date. The races are essentially a test of seamanship. The boats are 12ft fiin one-design, and the competitors bring only their own sails. The boats will be provided by the Takapuna Club and allotted by ballot for each race, so that boatbuilding is not so great a fa.ctor as ability to handle this type of craft. Last evening the Takapuna Boating Club decided to entertain the visitors in true North Shore style. The clubhouse will be fitted up as a hostel for the accommodation of the 18 competitors and their fathers or guardians who may accompany them. A programme, of entertainment is to be elaborated. The Auckland Regatta Committee is to be invited to put on ail event for the Takapuna class.
