RAHWAY BOILERS
STAFF UNAFFECTED BY IMPORTS (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. A return showing the number of railway boilers imported from Britain and America for the two years ended June 30, 1927, and the number of casual and permanent employees put off from the railway workshops in the same period, was supplied to the House of Representatives by the Minister of Railways, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, day. The return shows that ten boilers were imported from Britain and none from America. The number of men put off, as retired on superannuation, medicallj' - unfit or over age, deceased, dismissed, and resigned, was 347, 185 being permanent hands and 162 casual employees. The majority of the vacan - cies were filled by surplus staff, and no boilermakers were dispensed with at the main workshops as the result of the importation of boilers.
