“AN OCTOPUS”

PROTECTION ATTACKED LIBERAL PRESS VIEWS By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Thursday. The Liberal Press makes a feature to-day of the published summaries of the report of the Australian Tariff Board. . The “Daily Chronicle” says the worst of protection is that when once it has been adopted it becomes an octopus, and fastens its tentacles on the neck of the State. There is, it says, a whole network of vested interets in Australia which are ready to resist any reduction in tariffs to the utmost.. . The “Daily News” says that what the example of Australia proves is th*it even peoples who are apparently self-supporting and who are far removed from the internecine struggles of States with artificial boundaries and interlocked industries, cannot play with high tariffs, without paying the penalty. When America has discovered what Australia and Europe have already discovered, there will be real hope for an economically sane world.—A. and N.Z.
