SHOT AS A TRAITOR
VICTIM’S HONOUR VINDICATED AN ACT OF INSANITY A dead soldier’s honour has been vin- i dicated and reparation made to his j widow and son by the decison of a Military Court, at Brussels, which found that Honore Doyen, who betrayed an ambush, was insane at the time. When the war had just begun Belgian troops made an ambush near a bridge, in which they hoped to trap a contingent of Germans. As the Germans were approaching Doyen shouted and waved his arms to the oncoming enemy, who retreated unhurt.. Doyen was arrested by his angry countrymen. Following a quick courtmartial he was shot. A post-mortem revealed that Doyen had been suffering from a disease whose ravages would be enough to make him insane. The court has now been convinced that Doyen was out of his mind. He had been discharged on a certificate of insanity, and was on his w*ay home when he encountered the ambush. _ . On the recommendation of the L oiirt, the Government has made reparation to Doyen’s family and awarded them 100,000 francs.
