DEATH OF VALAIS
VALUABLE SIRE COT CASE FOR SOME DAYS Apparently the leading sire of Australia, Valais, who died on Monday, had been ailing for some time, for a message on Thursday of the previous week said that though,he was slightly improved, the complaint troubling the champion stallion, Valais, had not yet been diagnosed. For some days veterinary surgeons had kept the English horse under close observation and their efforts were more or less successful, but the improvement in Valais's condition had been insufflicent to alleviate the concern that has naturally been associated with the illness of the stallion. Within the last few days, Valais was taken from Mr. H. Thompson's stud at Oakleigh, to Mr. A. Thompson's stud at Widden, where he was under treatment. Brood mares from all parts of Australia were at Oakleigh waiting the recovery of the stallion, and the proof of the greatness of Valais is contained in some of the remarkable foals running in the paddocks. If appearance counts for anything, they promise to develop into future Manfreds, Heroics and Valicares.
