FRISCO JACK WINS MANAWATU STEEPLE

INTERESTING RACING AT AWAPUNI —LADY DESMOND’S KAIRANGA. (Special to THE SUN.) PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Interesting racing was witnessed at Awapuni to-day, when the Manawatu Hunt meeting was held in fine weather, and on a course which was in excellent condition. The promising Frisco Jack won the Manawatu Hunt Club Steeplechase in great style, and the principal flat race fell to the Hawera mare Lady Desmond, who might be seen in better company later in the season. ONLY THREE STARTERS Of th© eight acceptors in the Raumai Hunters’ Hurdles Handicap, only three lined up. These were, Sir Fanciful, Pink Rose, and Atene. Pink Rose was backed down to a very short price. Betting on the race was very poor, only a little over £330 being invested on the chances of the trio engaged. Pink Rose was in the lead practically all the way though Atene made several spasmodic moves toward the front. Eventually Pink Rose won by about a length from Atene, with Sir Fanciful several lengths away. LED ALL THE WAY In the betting on the Te Matai Maiden Plate, Shining Star was a better favourite than Fee Simple, and Aro de VaJ. was the best backed of the others. Aro do Val lost a lot of ground at the start, and Marble Zone also got away baclly. Vigilance shot to the front eit the start and was followed by the favourite, Shining Star. Corbell, Calitha, and Land Rent, were well placed, Vigilance kept her place at the head of the field all the way, and won by two lengths and a half from Shining Star, who was half a dozen lengths ahead of Fee Simple, with Dainty Ways fourth, with Calitha and Reremoana next. FRISCO JACK BOLTS Maidos was a £2 better favourite than Frisco Jack in the Manawatu Hunt Club Steeplechase Handicap. Frisco Jack bolted a. couple of miles before the start, but it did not affect him in the race, for he led all the way and wen well. Craigowen fell in the first round and appeared to have broken a hind leg. Maidos was out after Frisco Jack in th© last round, when he fell half a mile from home. The Curragh went at the next fence. Birkenose could make no impression on Frisco Jack, who won by half a dozen lengths. Risk who was third 200yds away, was the only other to finish. SHORT-PRICED WINNER Keddar, though just out of the Maiden class, was backed down to a short price in the Aokautere Hack Flying Handicap and, in the end, he pulled his backers through. The Raider i was well backed and he also ran a good race. The Raider and Arch Arrow were the early leaders from Barseline and Keddar, and there was no great change to the straight, where Keddar came through and, quickly taking charge, won by a length and a half from The Raider, who was a neck in front of Arch Arrow. Archon was a good fourth. Lin Arlington was chopped back early in the race. FAVOURITE’S WIN

The Kairanga Open Handicap saw several horses well-backed, the actual favourite was Lady Desmond, but Anolo was a good second favourite. There was some delay at the post, but the field went away in line and Buoyant took up the running from Royal Land, with Lady Desmond next, then Novar and Rouex, and Anolo following. Along the back Buoyant was displaced in the lead by Royal Land. Lady Desmond held her position and Novar moved forward. Lady Desmond was almost with the leaders at the home turn, and from there went on to win nicely by a length from Anolo, who finished fast on the outside. Star Area was a fair third and Rouex was fourth just ahead of Novar and Crown Area. GREAT JUMPING EXHIBITION Panchito was made a warm favourite for the Parorangi Hunters’ Steeplechase Handicap, and there was fair backing for Lightmore. Panchito set a fast pace and soon established a substantial lead. Lightmore was lying second with a round to go and Atene third, but Panchito was quite a dozen lengths clear. Lady Dolwill and Peep o' Day refused seven furlongs from home, and were not persevered with. Lightmore tried to reduce the gap between himself and Panchito. but was not equal to the task, and it was left to Atene to throw out the only real challenge. Atene made up ground well in the last half-mile, but was still several lengths behind the leader at the entrance to the straight. Both took the last obstacle well and, under pressure, Atene got to within a length arid a half of’ Panchito at the judge’s box. Panchito gave a great exhibition of jumping, but was slowing up noticeably at the finish. Lightmore was a very poor third, and none of the others finished, two as mentioned having run off, and Scornful having fallen.
