PRISON CHAPLAIN FOR 28 YEARS

REV. E. C. BUDD RESIGNS “This annual meeting desires to place on record its high appreciation of the splendid services rendered to the discharged prisoners on behalf of the society by Mr. Budd, and to thank him most sincerely for his humane and selfdenying labours in the performance of a difficult - and exacting duty.” Such was the text of a resolution passed at the twenty-sixth annual meeting of the Auckland Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Society, held yesterday, when the Rev. E. C. Budd tendered his resignation after 28 years’ service as Anglican chaplain to the Mount Eden prison, and nearly as long as honorary secretary of the Auckland Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society. Mr. Budd’s resignation will take effect from the end of the year. Archbishop Averill has appointed the Rev. Jasper Calder, Anglican City Missioner, to the vacant chaplaincy. Mr. Calder was elected to the secretaryship of the society. The appointment of Mr. Calder to the gaol chaplaincy is considered a very fitting one, as he has acted for several years at Anglican police court missioner, an office which can be advantageously combined with that of prison chaplain. Appointed by the late Bishop Cowie, Mr. Budd was for more than 20 years chaplain to the Mount Eden prison, the Auckland Hospital, the Auckland Mental Hospital, and the Auckland Infirmary.

The rapid growth of the work necessitated Mr. Budd’s relinquishing his duties at the infirmary about five years ago, and a year later Canon Haselden became hospital chaplain. Mr. Budd will continue as chaplain to the mental hospital. Mr. Budd expressed sincere thanks to the officers and members of the society, officials of the Prisons Department, and all trends, many unknown, who had helped him in his work.
