FLATS AND BOARDERS

PRIVATE HOTEL AWARD LOOPHOLE IN THE LAW When the secretary of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers’ Union made application in the Arbitration Court this morning to bring a certain residence under the Private Hotel Workers’ Award, Mr. S. E. Wright, for the Employers’ Association, stated that the house was only partly given up to boarders and the other rooms were rented without board. Mr. A. Jackson, for the union, pointed out the hardship this inflicted on the union to prove the number of boarders for which any house had accommodation. It would be open to any house to escape the provisions of the award. It could be alleged that . half the boarders, if there were more than 16, were “roomers.” Mr. Justice Frazer agreed that there was a difficulty, and he would like proof that the rooms let as flats were distinguished in some way from the boarding-house section of the building. The parties agreed to abide by/ the report of the Labour Department's inspector.
