Postmaster Faces Theft Charges
BIG SUMS INVOLVED NO BAIL FOR HEERDEGEN JpHEDERICK JOHN HEERDEGEN, lately postmaster at Ngongataha, appeared at the Police Court to-day and faced four theft charges. The amount of money involved is £330. and the thefts were alleged to have been committed between July 13 and September 22. Chief-Detective Cummings applied to have accused remanded to appear at Rotorua on October 14. Accused: May I have bail. Mr. Cummings: There are some bad features in this case, and it is alleged that large sums of money have not been accounted for. “There are also bad features which I do not propose to disclose,” added Mr. Cummings. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: There is a suggestion of suicide and so on—l can’t give him bail. The remand was granted.
