THREE CHINESE FINED S.M.’S PROMISE FULFILLED THREE Chinamen who stayed in ■7 New Zealand longer than the time 11 lowed in their temporary immigration permits were each fined «ElO at the Police Court today. Last week, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., announced that men who did not surrender immediately would be fined, and his warning has now been carried into effect. Yuen Chow Quong, the first of the trio, pleaded guilty. The Collector of Customs, Mr. A. V. Penn, said that accused was on his second visit to New Zealand. He overstayed his permit in 1924 by eight months, but he returned again in 1926, and once more remained longer than allowed. Mr. McLiver, who appeared for Ah Fow and Quing Tep, tjie other two, said they had now almost enough money to pay their boat fares. Each of the accused was fined £lO, in default one month’s imprisonment, and deportation orders were made.
