MAORI WAR VETERAN DEAD

LATE MR. C. HENDRY A survivor of the famous Forest Rangers, Mr. Charles Hendrv, died on Monday at his home, Grove Road Edendale, at the age of So. Born in England. Mr. Hendry came to Auckland in 1861 and having been in the army in England, soon after his arrival joined the Forest Rangers, the band which under Von Tempsky became famous for its daring and courage during the Maori War. He took part in the storming of Orakau Pa. He then went to the goldfields of Thames and Coromandel during the rush and later spent many years farming at Rangiaohia in the Waikato. He married Miss Sarah Porter, a member of a well-known family at Flat Bush. Mr. Hendry is survived by his wife, and two daughters, Mrs. A. Carter and Mrs. E. Montgomery, both of Auckland. There are six grandchildren.
