STRAND

“MISS NEW ZEALAND 1927” Enthusiastic and delighted audiences are crowding the Strand nightly where great interest is being manifested in the appearance of the provincial finalists of the ‘Miss New Zealand, 1927,” contest. A colourful ensemble introduces the girls to Aucklanders as ten demure and v€>rsr attractive maids peep shyly from' behind their parasols. Then come a series of short little sketches in which the finalists all appear. Interesting and very realistic portrayals are given, the wide range of work covered also contributing splendid variety. Heading the pictorial programme is Marion Davies' latest comedy, ‘‘Tillie the Toiler.” ‘‘Tillie the Toiler” is comedy romance and pathos—the natural, human and true-to-life adventures of a typical business girl—portrayed with fidelity and realism by Marion Davies, who has never done anything finer or more suitable to her great talents. In the cast are many other wellknown players, including Matt Moore, Estelle Clark, George K. Arthur, George Fawcett, Bert Roach, Claire McDowell. Marion Davies’s success in such excellent productions as “Beverly of Graustark” and “Lights of Old Broadway,” has been more than duplicated in her picture, "Tillie the Toiler.” Marion Davies has developed into one of the finest comediennes of. the screen, and it is to be hoped she will always be given comedy roles to portray in her future pictures. For several years she gave promise as a comedienne, but it. was not until this picture, “Tillie the Toiler,” that she was given an out-and-out comedy role. And she has run away with it!
