AT EMPLOYER’S EXPENSE
YOUNG MAN’S MOTOR RUN PLACED ON PROBATION (From Our Own Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, To-day. A young man, of 24 summers, Edward Randell, appeared in the Pukekohe Court to-day before Mr. E. Page, S.M., charged with theft of a cheque for £lO 10s, and also rabbit skins to the total value of £ls. A charge of converting a motor-car to his own use was also preferred against him. The police evidence showed that accused cashed a cheque given ay his employer to pay an account and during his employer’s absence sold the skins in Hamilton and drove the car to Putaruru. Counsel for accused, Mr. M. R. Grierson, attributed accused’s foolish actions to the fact that he had suffered from ill-health. Accused had an arrangement with his employer to use the car when he desired, provided he paid his share of the benzine. During his employer’s absence he set out for Putaruru and met with an accident at Hamilton and was compelled to cash the cheque to pay for repairs and also dispose of the skins. When ha reached his destination he advised the owner of the car of what he had clone and gave himself up to the police. The magistrate took the view that he had not stolen the car and he was ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within three years. On the theft charge he was placed on probation for a similar term, conditionally that he made restitution.
