INCREASE OF TRAM FARES
Sir, Unless the tramway management can show that its latest extension—the Great South Road —is a paying proposition, it would be useless for it to attempt any further extension. The latest rise in the 12-trip concession card will certainly show a further decrease of revenue on this route. Take for example the 12-trip bearer ticket of 3s Id from Green Lane to the city, and compare with the tram 12-trip ticket for 4s 7d for the same distance. The rail fares are not only 80 per cent. cheaper, but the trip to the city is covered in half the time. A halfyearly railway season ticket from Green Lane to the city works out at 2d a trip if used 12 times a week, and correspondingly cheaper if used more often. The railway management deserves credit and every encouragement for the way it caters for suburban traffic, and I am sure this latest increase of tram fares will swell the railway revenue. TRAVEL BY RAIL.
