MR. COOK’S DISMISSAL
Sir.— With reference to the reasons given by the Mount Albert Borough Council for the dismissal of its engineer, might I ask if it was not more courageous and manly on the part of Mr. Cook to estimate at a reasonable figure, and thus avoid cut-throat prices, all too prevalent on the part of many embryonic contractors? If the council considered Mr. Cook’s estimates too high one may be pardoned for asking if .he council has always accepted the lowest tender. It is now up to the majority of the councillors, and the Mayor, to face the ratepayers, as Mr. Cook and Crs. Brigham and Russell have done, giving reasons for what, to my way of thinking, is an unwarranted action. I am not alone in thinking that we have not yet arrived at a fair solution of this question. The ratepayers’ minds are in such a ferment at the actions of the council that nothing short of an inquiry by disinterested persons will satisfy them. ARGUS-
