OLD BOYS WIN SEMI-FINAL
The semi-final of the Whangarei knockout competition was played at Kensington Park on Saturday, Old Boys gaining a decisive victory over Hikurangi by 26 to 9. The Hikurangi backs were not up to the class of their opponents and Findlay and Wyatt were easily the best. McDonald was the star forward, the others being more or less uniform. The Old Boys backs were in great form, Brunnette, Wilson and Waterman in the threequarter line being particularly good. Britland at five-eighth and Miller at half also played well. Aim,, Cotton, SherrifT an d Webber were noticeable among the forwards, although the two former had to retire injured. Aim with a broken ankle, and Cotton with a sprained ankle. VIGOROUS OPENING Hikurangi attacked strongly at the commencement of the game, causing Old Boys to fore® three times, one of these with a good deal of luck. Old Boys then turned the tables, and Miller, from half, made a nice opening and transferred to Britland, who beat his man and passed to Waterman, following up strongly. Waterman passed back to Britland who scored near the corner flag. Waterman took the kick from an awkward position and added two points. Old Boys 5 Hikurangi ...... 0 Shortly after change over Old Boys were awarded a penalty for obstruction and Webber added three points. Old Boys ............ 8 Hikurangi 0 From a Hikurangi attack Brunnette called a mark while off-side right in front of his goal, and Findlay kicked a penalty goal for Hikurangi, B—3. Almost on half-time, Harris, the Hikurangi centre, took Old Boys by surprise and ran right through the team. Findlay failed with the kick. Old Boys .. 8 Hikurangi ............ 6 OLD BOYS GO AHEAD After half-time Wilson made a fine opening to Waterman who scudded up the line to again score in the corner. He took his own kick and added two more points. Old Boys 13 Hikurangi 6 At the end of this spell, Wilson got the ball from behind a line-out and dodged through the team, running round to score between the posts. Waterman again added the extra points. Old Boys 18 Hikurangi .. 6 In the last spell, Collins broke through and scored between the posts, Webber missing an easy kick at goal. Old Boya 21 Hikurangi 6 The next score was made by Wilson who again dummied and dodged past four men, scoring cleverly. Waterman converted, 26—6. Right on the final whistle, Cunningham got possession while Hikurangi was attacking and slipped over near the corner flag. Findlay failed with the kick. Old Boys .. 26 Hikurangi .......... 9 Mr. S. Weston was referee.
