Air Speed-Limit Not Yet Reached
SCHNEIDER CUP RACE WINNERS WELCOMED HOME British Wireless—Press Assn Copyright Reccl. 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, Saturday. What most impressed those present at the reception of the Schneider Cup team was that hero-worship was discouraged. The reception occupied less than half aft hour, and little time was occupied in photographing or interviewing. Flight-Lieut. S. N. Webster himself said to an Interveiwer, “I am not a civilian, and can therefore say nothing,” and that was the spirit of the proceedings. Air Vice-Marshal F. R. Scarlett, commander of the team, said in a little speech: “We sent our team, and we won the Cup as a team.” He added: “The generous hospitality of our Italian opponents will always be remembered by us. They are sportsmen and we hope that on the next occasion they will experience far better luck than they did in this contest.” Asked If he thought the limit of sp'eed had been reached, the Air Vice-Marshal replied: “I should say certainly not. It is not possible on a triangular course to make the same speed as on a straight course.” The reception at the homecoming of tie Schneider Cup winners at Croydon Airdrome did not lack in enthusiasm, but the bad weather kept thousands of people away. The spectators watched through rain and mist the approach, in arrow formation, of the fighting airplanes, which escorted the air-liner from which Lieutenant Webster and his companions landed at the appointed time. They were greeted with cheers and cries of “Bravo!” and were formally congratulated by Air-Marshal Sir John Salmond, and were escorted to the pavilion, where brief speeches were made. Lieutenant Webster said he was proud to have won the cup.—A. and N.Z.
