MORE GOOD PLAY AUCKLANDERS GET THROUGH; j J (Special to THE SU -Y. J PALMERSTON N., Saturday. The Auckland contingent at the New Zealand ladies’ golf tournament had a good run to-day, and put out important competitors. The most noteworthy win was that of Miss D. Horton, Titirangi, who beat the youthful South Island recordbreaker. Miss O. Kay, at the 19th hole. Miss Kay has been a bit inconsistent, but the scoring in the match to-day was fairly good for match play. Two lots of brilliant fours opened | the match, but Miss Kay won the next 1 two in 4 and 3, her card at this stage being two under bogey. It was not until the ninth that Miss Horton won a hole, but she got a 3 there, and turned for home 2 down, Miss Kay having been out in the much better score of 38 tc 42. The 10th was halved, but Miss Horton played the better at the next two, ; being three strokes lower on them than Miss Kay. Three holes were then halved, and Miss Horton became I up at the 16th, to lose it again on the 18th, where she missed a longish putt ! for a half. ; The 19th saw Miss Kay through with j her second, and with the return, Miss ! Horton winning the hole and the match. The cards were: OUT Miss Horton . 4,4,5 5,6,6 5.4,3 —42 Miss Kay .... 4,4,4 3,6,4 5,4,4 —3B 1 N Miss Horton . 4.5,4 5,5,5 5,4,5 —• 42 Miss Kay .... 4,7,5 5,5,5, 6,4,4 —45 NO EASY MATCH Miss Payton, Rotorua, did not have any easy match against Mrs. Trevor, Palmerston North, who only .qualified to play in the championship a couple of weeks ago. Miss Payton was 4 up at the turn, but Mrs. Trevor won the next two, and kept Miss Payton to it until the match ended 5 and 3. Miss E. Culling, Auckland, continued playing well, and put out Miss Acheson, Nelson, 2 and 1. Miss Culling was 5 up at the turn, having gone out in 39, but that was by no means the end of the match. She became 6 up, but Miss Acheson counter-at-tacked and regained four holes, to - eventually lose 2 and 1. Mrs. Deighton, Titirangi, was defeated by the seasoned local player, Mrs. Collinson. The two were square at the 11th, but Mrs. Collinson won the next three. Mrs. Deighton reduced the lead to two again at the next, and the remaining holes were halved.
