NEW TARIFFS EFFECT CONCERN ON WEST COAST Press Association. HOKITIKA, Friday. Concern is felt locally for the future of mining and gold dredging on a large scale by reason of the heavy impost Imposed under the amending Customs The former duty was 10 per cent. British and 13 per cent, general. It is now proposed to increase to 20 per cent. British and 40 per cent, general. It has been ascertained that the advance will have the effect of curtailing local expansion In prospecting. There has been progress at Kumara and elsewhere, in seeking new areas, but it will bo quite impossible to install suitable equipment and plants for hard lowgrade ground under the new tant. Machinery cannot be provided in the Dominion equal to the requirements, and plants have to be imported. Representations are being made to the Government on the question.
