HAWKER’S BAD DAY

THROWN FROM HIS CART THEN ARREST® George Alfred james ARMSTRONG, aged 54. crayfish hawker, had a bad day yesterday. He fell out of his eaxt, had his head cut, and a finger crushed. then to crown misfortune with misfortune, he was arrested for drunkenness. At the Police Court to-day he pleaded not guilty to a charge of being drunk while driving a horse and cart. Constable Buckley said he saw Armstrong driving his cart fast and erratically along High Street. He had fallen from the vehicle, and admitted having had liquor. Armstrong’s version was that he had been jolted from the cart when it caught in a rut. The only liquor he had was a brandy after the accident This remark he repeated fervently and often to the magistrate, Mr. F. K Hunt. Mr. Hunt: I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt—anyway he’s been punished enough. The charge is dismissed.
