McLACHLAN MONUMENT DAMAGED IN STORM
MAIN COLUMN SPLIT The report of lightning having damaged the McLachlan Monument on Puponga Point, in the Cornwallis Park, has been confirmed by Mr. Mead, of the city engineer’s department, who was requested to visit the monument, a,fter the report of damage was made by THE SUN on Thursday. It was found that the main column had been severely damaged, probably in last Monday’s electrical storm. The main column has been split from top to bottom, but the base is apparently undamaged. The monument is altogether 43 feet high, and consists of a hollow concrete column, surmounted by a sphere, the whole standing on a concrete base 18 feet square.
