Little Theatre Record
PROGRAMMES OF PRODUCTIONS MAKE INTERESTING READING
A record of the programmes of the Auckland Little Theatre Society makes interesting reading. AN NY’S FIRST PLAY,” the first production, in 1925, ran for a season of five nights at the Operatic Society’s Hall in Grafton Road. The late Mr. Herbert Bentley was the producer. On that programme is a message concerning the aims and objects of the society and a message from the famous Sir Barry Jackson, one sentence of which runs: “Tell the good people you have met to cultivate the dignity of humility and to aim high.” Very, very sound advice that. Of the plays which were under consideration at that time by Mr. Bentley the following have been produced: “The Cassilis Engagement,” “You Never Can Tell.” “E. and 0.E.,” “The Man of Destiny,” “A Maker of Dreams.” “The Dover .Road,” “Quinneys,” and, of course, the recent triple bill. The Little Theatre Society is making good headway under the present producer, Mr. Kenneth Brampton. The last season was a success from every point of view and the future outlook is particularly promising. There is a wonderful field for repertory work and the day surely is not far distant when we shall be seeing Ibsen, perhaps Chekov, maybe Pirandello or Eugene O’Neil and many of the other authors who are not sought with any enthusiasm by the commercial stage.
