TRENTHAM TESTS

GRAND KNIGHT WELL

HORSES FOR ELLERSLIE DO GOOD WORK (Special to THE SUN.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Grand Knight is looking and going better than he ever did. Yesterday morning on the trial grass he galloped half a mile the reverse way in 51. He should get into the money at Ellerslie. no matter what the track conditions he gets, for he is partial to soft going. Degage failed in the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui when well fancied by her party, but she has improved since then and is galloping in good style. At Trentham yesterday morning on the grass she went six furlongs, the last half in 52, and could have done better. Degage will probably make her next appearance at Otaki. Kilbronsyth, who looked very much in the rough a few weeks ago, is shaping up well toward form and appears to be standing his work in good style, showing no signs of soreness. He galloped five furlongs yesterday with Joy Bird, the last half in 52. Kilbronsyth should win races if he keeps sound. Flying Binge arrived back at Trentham from Auckland yesterday, and will be put aside until later in the season. Wild Pigeon has always been finishing on at the end of her races, and this was particularly noticeable in her last start dt Wanganui, where she came, into fourth place from a long way back. She is being given an opportunity over a middle distance at Ellerslie next week-end. and should run well. She galloped the reverse way yesterday morning nicely over four furlongs in company with Mandarene. Shot Silk, who ran well in the Y/anganui Debutante Stakes, has gone on all right since, and he will accompany Grand Knight and Wild Pigeon to Auckland on Monday. Shot Silk is a big-framed youngster who seems to be still growing. He galloped four furlongs the reverse yesterday morning, with Cerf, in 52, and v> pleasingly. A. Goodman, the Trentham ownertrainer, experienced a slice of very bad luck yesterday, when his brood mare Rene, due to foal to Black Ronald, got out on the roads and was run ov by a train and killed. Rene, who was foa,i{|d in 1909, was a good mare herself When racing. and at the stud she gave her owner Printemps, Rimutaka, Miss Rene, Rene Mavis, Mountain Lady, Arpent and Cerf—all good gallopers.
