CIRCULATING THE WORK

PROBLEM FOR COMMITTEE THREE-DAY WEEK SUGGESTED How to make the money circulate was a point discussed by the Citizens' Unemployment Committee yesterday. Mr. A. S. Bankart suggested that if two five-hour shifts were put on at 7s 6d a day a man, it would enable more men to earn. It would be preferable to giving each man a fortnight’s work. Councillor E. J. Phelan contended that it would not give men an opportunity of seeking other work. It would be much better to give each man employed three full days a week. Mr. W. E. Bush, City Engineer, was asked to report on a number of ideas tnat were expressed to help the funds to circulate. The committee reaffirmed the principle of giving work to married men and single men with dependents.
