Playgrounds for All

WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED SCHEME CONSIDERED A children’s playground at Grey Lynn Park, the preparation of playing areas at Point Chevalier, and a link between Titoki and Hill Streets and the War Memorial Museum approach, were decided on by the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee yesterday as undertakings for the absorption of the unemployed. IT was estimated that work for 40 men could be found at Grey Lynr Park, and for about 50 at Point Chevalier. Mr. W. E. Bush, city engineer, re- . ported on various schemes to yester- , day’s meeting, and on Monday the com- ] mittee will tour round the works j under consideration. One scheme. estimated to cost £10,830, for a motor road from the intersection of Stanley Street and Domain Street to the Domain Drive, will have further consideration later. Mr. Bush could not recommend the terracing of the Domain facing Stanley Street. He also reported to the committee on plans for roading at Waiatarua Park, to cost £II,OOO. and on the proposal for a sports ground on the site between Old Mill Road and Western Springs, with adjoining football grounds, Lae whole to cost about £25,000. Councillor J. Dempsey advised the committee not to let the idea get abroad that the City Council was getting roading work done at the expense of the unemployed. Councillor E. J. Phelan and Mr. H. B. Lusk were opposed to the centralisation of playing areas in the Domain. It would be better to supply parts of the city where there was now a deficiency. The Mayor was asked to represent the urgency of the work at Waiatarua Park to the City Council, which already had a fund in hand for this work. The committee has under consideration the question of insuring the men employed as a provision against accident. The offer of the Rugby League to arrange a benefit match for October 22 was accepted with thanks.
