“PULL DOWN HOARDINGS”
BOYCOTT OF PRODUCTS CAMPAIGN FOR BEAUTY Boycott of products advertised on unlovely hoardings was suggested by members of the Great South Road Beautifying Council, which was inaugurated last evening. “We would make a good start with our beautifying scheme if we pulled down that hoarding by the railway bridge,” said Mr. G. W. Hutchison, the chairman. Mr. A. C. A. Sexton: Why not notify members to boycott the product advertised ? Mr. R. A. Lippincott: A similar scheme was started in the United States, and the companies removed their eyesores. The chairman said that the Automobile Association’s service officer had been authorised by companies to pull doT\m old hoardings which were deemed to be eyesores. The Railway Department was the worst offender in hoardings, and it would have to be brought into line. Mr. Lippincott: I wish you joy of it. The Institute of Architects has been in touch with the Department for two 3-ears about the defacement of public buildings. We have met with a. flat refusal. The Department says its advertising is neat and tasty, and that it brings in revenue. Perhaps a boycott would meet with success.
