GIFT TO UNEMPLOYED Applause and congratulations accompanied the motion passed by the City Council last evening thanking the salaried officers of the various city departments for their generous gift of 3 per cent, of their salaries to the unemployed. Cr. E. J. Phelan suggested to the Mavcr that he might appeal to the general public not to undertake in their spare lime work at which the unemployed might be able to earn some wages. Th * Mayor left it %o the Press to give this suggestion publicity. Th-f tramwaymen had been appealed to, said Cr. J. A. C. Allum, along the lines of Mr. Phelan’s suggestion. Thf Citizens’ Unemployment Commitee will meet this afternoon to consider further measures to relieve the situation. u
