MORRINSVILLE HOTEL TO KEEP ITS LICENCE

JUDGE STRINGER’S DECISION fpHE application for a writ of certiorari to quash the publican's licence granted in respect of the Morrinsville Hotel, was dismissed to-day by Mr., Justice StringerTli© pllaintiff was William Johnstone, ■a farmer, of Morrinsville (Mr. Tuck and Mr. McGregor) and the defendants, the Ohinemuri Licensing Committee, Thomas Anderson, hotelkeeper, William Montgomery and Ernest Montgomery (Mr. R. McVeagh). The motion for a writ was brought on the grround that the committee had no jurisdiction to grant a licence, and tha t licences could only be granted at the annual meeting of the committee. In his reserved judgment, his Honour held that licences could be granted at not only the first annual meeting, but also at meetings from time to time after such meeting. He could see no reason for depart-) ing from the grounds of the section which enabled licences to be granted, and the motion would therefore be dismissed with costs.
