TAKAPUNA BOROUGH
MILFORD BEACH DESPOILED “We must safeguard our beaches,” declared Cr. H. W. Hayden at a meeting of the Taka puna Borough Council last evening, when a report was received from the by-laws inspector. Mr. Wheeler, stating that large quantities of sand are being taken from Milford Beach. The inspector and his assistant have on several occasions warned the two firms who remove the sand, but with no effect. It was decided to put the matter in the hands of the borough solicitor with view to obtaining an injunction to prevent the further removal of sand. Two-inch wafer mains are to be laid in Byron, Wolseley and Burns Avenues.* and in Northcroft Street. The present mains are too small and the water pressure inadequate for the ordinary household purposes and for firefighting purposes. Street works to the value of €SS 16s are to be carried out in Marine Terrace. Northumberland Avenue, Auburn and Huron Streets, and in Wairau and Pierce Roads. * * • It was recommended by the Legal and Finance Committee that the application of the Foresters' Dodge for a remission of rates should be refused. It was held that the hall in question was erected for trading purposes, and that the council had no power to remit the rates,.this being purely a trading venture. The Takapuna Ex-Servicemen’s Club advised that their recent street collection, along with subsidies, will provide over €6OO for the relief of unemployment. This amount, together with €l3 donated by the council, is to be used for improvements to the Takapuna and Milford Schools playgrounds. * • • A complaint was received from the Mayoress’ Relief Committee that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board refused to give any help to deserving cases in Takapuna on the grounds that there is already a relief committee in the borough. The Mayor. Mr. J. W. Williamson, is to wait on the board at its next meeting to ask for a grant, to be administered by the local committee. A deputation from the Bayswatcr Boating Club, headed by Mr. R. Liddgard, the commodore, objected to the proposal of the council that the club should be asked to make another emergency exit at the clubhouse. Both NTr. Liddgard and the vice-commodore. Mr. J. McKay, stated that there are five exsits at present to the hall and that no others are necessary. A committee consisting of Crs. J. Guiniven and J. Davis and Mr. Lawrence, the building inspector, is to examine the clubhouse and to report at the next council meeting.
