NEW SPORTS GROUND FOR AUCKLAND?
AREA AT WESTERN SPRINGS CITIZENS’ COMMITTEE TO DECIDE It has now been decided to submit to the Citizens’ Committee adminis tering the Mayor’s fund for the relief of unemployment a plan for a banked cycle track, a quarter of a mile In circumference, to be constructed on a city reserve off the Great North Road near Western Springs. The ground lends itself naturally to dev€ilopment as a cycle track, and within its circumference a football ground can bo formed. This inner area will also serve for athletic sports and cricket in the season. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said yesterday that the scheme was as jet in the embryo stage. Rough plans haa been drawn, but no estimate made as to the cost. He was of the opinion however, that the work would be found within the means of the committee. An advantage was that the formation of the ground favoured its conversion. as proposed, and the work was one on which the unemployed could be engaged. The proposal was discussed yesterday afternoon, when the Mayor am the Parks Committee met executiveofficers of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at the Domain. The scheme was approved by both the Parks Committee and the Auckland Centre executive.
